The 2019-20 schoolyear is well underway and we’re very excited as we roll out the second year of our new four-year Workforce Prep program!
This year’s tenth–grade students started the year by meeting and getting to know their mentors. As the year progresses and with help from their mentors, these students will explore different careers, develop valuable leadership and human resource skills, and create academic and career goals.
Our eleventh-grade students have already participated in two exciting seminars. Students at Warren Mott and Harper Woods High School attended a networking skills development seminar where local business professionals taught our students everything from how to shake someone’s hand to how to communicate their career goals. A few weeks later they went to Lear Corporation or Magna where they spent the day participating in hands-on career exploration activities in finance, marketing, engineering, and sales. It was truly amazing to see our students connecting with volunteers from the business community, interacting and learning important skills while getting excited about various career fields. This year’s Workforce Prep program is at seven local high schools (Cass Tech, Mumford, Southfield for the Arts and Technology, Harper Woods, Warren Mott, Community, and Pontiac Academy for Excellence) and includes 150 volunteers from the business community who will mentor 580 students.
