When Hussam Omairat entered our Workforce Prep Mentoring Program as a 10th-grade student at Warren Mott High School, he was motivated and determined, but like many students, he wasn’t entirely sure how to navigate the path ahead.
“I’ve always had that drive,” Hussam said. “I just needed it to come out.”
Today, Hussam is a college graduate with a degree in electrical engineering and building his career as a Design Engineer and Project Manager. Looking back, he credits our program and his longtime volunteer Career Mentor, Mike Malaga of Fifth Third Bank, with helping him develop the confidence, perspective, and perseverance that made his success possible.
Learning What Success Really Takes
As a first-generation college student from a family that immigrated from Syria, Hussam faced challenges that many students encounter when pursuing higher education. While he knew he wanted to be successful, he didn’t fully understand how college worked or what steps were necessary to prepare for a career.
“I didn’t know what internships were,” he said. “I didn’t know how college worked at all. I thought it was just like high school.”
At the time, Hussam believed that things would eventually work themselves out. Through our program, however, he began to see success differently.
“My attitude changed,” he said. “It won’t get done unless you put in the work, have that drive and actually put effort in.”
That shift in mindset became one of the most important lessons he carried with him throughout high school, college, and into his professional career.
The Power of a Consistent Mentor
One of the defining aspects of Hussam’s Winning Futures experience was his relationship with his volunteer Career Mentor, Mike.
Over seven years, Mike remained a steady source of encouragement, accountability, and practical advice as Hussam navigated high school, college, career decisions, and eventually the job market.
“He’s helped me a lot, not only academically, but just in life in general,” Hussam said. “He really gave me a different perspective on how to live your life.”
Mike encouraged Hussam to maintain a positive attitude while staying focused on his goals. Whether discussing classes, career choices, or job offers, Mike was always available to help him think through important decisions.
“When I got a job offer, I brought it up to him,” Hussam said. “He helped me understand salary, benefits, and what I should be looking for. He’s always been there for me.”
Just as importantly, Mike helped create accountability.
Each month, Hussam would meet with Mike and share updates on school, work, and life. Those conversations motivated him to stay focused and continue making progress.
“When I had those monthly meetings with Mr. Malaga, I wanted to be able to tell him I went to class, I studied, and I got good grades,” Hussam said. “It kept me in check.”
Finding the Courage to Change Course
One of the biggest decisions Hussam faced came during college.
When he first enrolled, he planned to pursue a career in the medical field. But after taking classes in chemistry, biology, and health sciences, he quickly realized he wasn’t passionate about the path he had chosen.
“I would go to school just hating it,” he recalled.
The realization was difficult, especially because his family had always encouraged him to pursue a medical career. But after talking with his mom and Mike, Hussam made a decision that would change the course of his future.
He switched his major to electrical engineering.
“I’ve always liked engineering, but I never really thought about it as a career,” he said.
Today, he has no regrets.
“I’m proud of what I did,” Hussam said. “I really enjoy my job.”
Persevering Through Challenges
The transition from college to career presented another challenge.
Like many recent graduates, Hussam entered a competitive job market where finding the right opportunity required persistence and resilience. Rather than becoming discouraged, he relied on lessons he had learned through our program.
“Just keep applying, keep practicing, keep building your network,” he said. “That mentality really helped me.”
Eventually, his hard work paid off. He secured the position he wanted and began building a successful career in the engineering field.
Looking Ahead
Although Hussam has already achieved significant milestones, he sees them as only the beginning. He is currently exploring master’s degree programs and plans to continue growing professionally while working toward long-term goals of independence and lifelong learning.
When asked what lesson stands out most from his seven years in our program, his answer was immediate.
“Look at everything in a positive way,” he said. “Even if something doesn’t go your way, maybe it’s a sign that something better is ahead.”
For Hussam, our program was a source of guidance, accountability, and encouragement during some of life’s most important transitions. Through the support of his mentor, Mike, and the skills he developed along the way, he transformed uncertainty into confidence and ambition into achievement.
Today, as a college graduate and working engineer, Hussam’s story demonstrates what can happen when students are paired with caring adults who help them recognize their potential and provide the support needed to turn goals into reality.
