Nick Maluchnik, Employee Benefits Advisor, Brown & Brown of Detroit, Inc., Winning Futures Class of 2013, Warren Mott High School

Nick was a B student at Warren Mott High School and excelled in sports, but he lacked a realistic vision and direction for his future. His mentor, Steve Hettrick, benefits leader at Brown & Brown of Detroit, helped Nick explore various careers, create academic and career plans, and establish related goals. Nick attended Adrian College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and a minor in business. After working in human resources and sales, Nick realized he still hadn’t found his passion. With continued mentoring from Steve, Nick used the critical thinking skills he learned through Winning Futures to reevaluate his career path and eventually took a job at Brown & Brown of Detroit, where he helps small to midsize groups establish employee benefit packages.

“Steve taught me valuable lessons about how to analyze situations, how to set goals, and how to help others,” said Nick. “I continue to use these skills in my personal life and for the clients I serve. I owe a lot to Winning Futures and Steve.”

“The Winning Futures mentoring program has been really rewarding, for both Nick and me, since we first met when Nick was in high school and continuing to this day,” said Steve. “We’ve kept touch throughout his career and still use the same goal setting process that we learned in Winning Futures, setting both short-term and long-term goals for his development.”
