Shirley Russell, B.A., M.A.T. – Classroom Assistant

Shirley is an experienced secondary educator who enjoys using the skills she has honed over the years to support students in our Workforce Prep mentoring program. As a classroom assistant, she works closely with facilitators to ensure our classrooms are ready for students and assists with delivery of our curriculum.

Shirley worked more than 30 years in the Harper Woods School District, engaging students in hands-on science and STEM activities. She helped develop curriculum through science curriculum teams and created opportunities for excellence through outreach in the International Baccalaureate program. Shirley also served on the Ferndale School District Board of Education and was very active in Boy Scouts where she held roles as den leader for Cub Scout Pack 1484 and troop secretary for Troop 1930. She truly loves helping young people be successful through multiple paths of opportunity.

“Students need more than an academic curriculum to be successful,” said Shirley. “They need support from the whole community and Winning Futures brings that community to them.”

Shirley has lived in Warren most of her life and attended Wayne State University on a full-tuition merit scholarship. After completing her Bachelor of Arts in Biology, she decided her passion was in education and continued at Wayne State to complete certification requirements and earn a Master of Arts in Teaching. She was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Today, Shirley is slowly experiencing empty nest syndrome as her four children complete their college education and move forward with their lives. Shirley is a scientist at heart and loves to spend time in nature, quietly observing the world around her!
