12th Grade One-on-One Mentoring Program Scholarship Requirements

One-on-One 12th Grade Scholarship

Cupp-Hamilton Scholarship Eligibility

  • Participation in the 2023-24 Winning Futures One-on-One Mentoring program at Cass Technical High School, Communication and Media Arts High School, Harper Woods High School, Mumford High School, Pontiac Academy for Excellence, or Warren Mott High School with at least 70% attendance through April 2024.
  • Students can receive a lifetime total of $2,000 in Cupp-Hamilton Scholarship awards. Students who have previously won Cupp-Hamilton Scholarships are eligible if their previous awards total less than $2,000.
  • There is no G.P.A. requirement

Winning Futures scholarships can be used for any of the following:

  • Tuition payments at a community college or university (including graduate level courses)
  • Technical training
  • Apprenticeship training
  • Certificate programs
  • Other related educational costs while enrolled in school

This scholarship cannot be used to pay a student loan. The scholarship amount can be up to $2,000. This is not a recurring scholarship.

Application Process

Online Application - Complete and submit all parts of the Cupp-Hamilton Scholarship application by January 9, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

Judging Process

Judges will assess your essay based on:

  • Quality
  • Adherence to all essay requirements
  • Responses to the questions

Interviews

Applicants whose essays score in the top tier will advance to an interview round. Each finalist will participate in an interview.

Winners Notified

May 2024

If you win a scholarship, you must be enrolled and active in the Winning Futures College Success Mentoring Program and maintain 70% attendance through the program year in order to receive the money. You will sign up in the summer.

Scholarship Questions

Answer these five questions:

Write your long-term vision statement.
(Minimum five sentences, may exceed) Include goals, core values, strengths, and why this vision is right for you.

What is an academic goal you can set for school right now?
Outline the goal using the SMART process with at least five detailed steps to complete to reach the goal. Include the date you will achieve this by.

Discuss your strengths and weaknesses, and how they set you apart.
(Minimum five sentences, may exceed) Describe your top strengths and give examples of how they help you as a student, and have helped you overcome an obstacle in your personal life. Explain two of your weaknesses and how you will work towards improving them this year.

What is your current long-term career goal and why is it a good fit for you?
(Minimum three paragraphs of 4-5 sentences each, may exceed) State which career option you are most interested in and why. Discuss in detail how your strengths match the job duties and explain the benefits and sacrifices. Include the specific education you will need and where you will go for it.

Imagine you're receiving the Winning Futures scholarship.
Write a speech (Minimum five sentences, may exceed) that you would give to say thank you. Include the following points:

  • Start by saying your name.
  • You're a 12th grader at [name of your school]
    - EXAMPLE: “I’m currently attending________ and I’m studying______”
  • You want to become a [your desired profession].
    - EXAMPLE: “My career goal is_______”
  • Talk about how you've changed since you joined the program. Think about who you were back then and who you are now and how you have grown or changed.
    - EXAMPLE: “When I started in the Winning Futures program I was _______ Now I’m________”
  • Share your thoughts about your career mentor. Explain how they've helped you and what you've learned from them.
  • Take a moment to thank those who supported you along the way. This could be your teachers, mentor, Winning Futures program facilitator, family members, or anyone else you feel helped you.
  • Add anything else about your experience in the program, your career mentors, what you learned or how you benefited from the program.
