When Carla was in high school, she noticed that many of her friends were not given the chance to fall in love with learning, and she became frustrated with the inequality she saw around her. Since then, she has spent her entire career working towards improving how we educate kids. She joined our team in June, 2015, as a program facilitator. Carla now serves as the director of programs, leading program design, implementation, and evaluation.
Carla brings to Winning Futures more than a decade of experience in education. While at Wendell Phillips Academy in Chicago, she taught 9th grade literature. At Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods, Carla designed and taught the middle school’s reading intervention program. She also worked to bring the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program to the school, serving as the onsite coordinator and AVID teacher.
“Most people have a story about how an educator or positive adult role model impacted their life for the better,” said Carla. “It takes a village to raise our kids.”
A proud Detroiter, Carla attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education and English literature. While there, Carla was a member of the gospel choir and loved hosting soul food dinners. She earned her Master of Education in urban education and pedagogy from National Louis University. Carla now lives in Detroit and enjoys exploring new places, laughing often, and teaching preschoolers at her church.
